While archival records shed light on the role of animals in urban life in Anatolia, particularly the Ottoman imperial center, there is scarce archaeological evidence regarding the interaction between humans and animals in rural settings. This study analyzes animal remains from the Late Ottoman Period unearthed at the archaeological site of Matiate in the Mardin region of Southeast Anatolia. Methods such as species identification, quantification, determination of age-sex, and butchery marks were employed in the study. The data obtained indicates that the inhabitants of Matiate were more reliant on goats than sheep, compared to other archaeological sites in the region. Alongside sheep and goats, bones of large livestock such as cattle, horses, camels, and donkeys, as well as those of domesticated pigs, dogs, cats, foxes, hedgehogs, rabbits, rats, and various bird species, were identified at the settlement. Furthermore, the presence of domestic pigs suggests that the people of Matiate during this period had a distinct religious and cultural background. In conclusion, this study contributes to our understanding of human-animal relationships within the context of diverse cultural and social dynamics under the Late Ottoman Empire.
